Cycling – The Benefits are EndlessA toast to your healthBiking is a great cardiovascular workout. It benefits the heart better than walking and doesn’t involve the pounding of the joints while jogging. If you commute to work, it becomes part of a regular routine that takes no time out of your day, because otherwise you would be stuck in a car or a bus. You lose weight and keep it off, and build muscles. More than just an activity, cycling is a conscious lifestyle many people stick to throughout their lives, keeping them fit and active right into their senior years.Transportation and financesNot only is it a great way to get exercise every day, but if you bike to work, you spend no gas, no parking fees, no vehicle maintenance, and in some cases, you may arrive at work in a shorter time (ever been caught in rush hour traffic?)Yes, biking is safeWhen asked, the biggest reason why people don’t ride a bike is they think it’s dangerous. Numerous studies point out the “thousands” of cyclists killed each year, and every other day you hear of an accident between a cyclist and a motorist. But if you delve deeper into the statistics, you will see that the thousands killed each year are figures from the 1970’s, and that 619* actually died in 2003, a drop from the year before. That’s certainly a high number, but keep in mind that there were also a total of 42 643 deaths involving a vehicle. If you wish to ride to work, a good way to stay safe is to obey the rules of the road and plan your route in advance. Buy a map and figure out where you live and where you work. Are there residential streets parallel to the major road you take by car? Are there bike paths en route? Taking a different route is not only safer, it is also quieter, more relaxing, and you don’t breathe in exhaust fumes.EnjoymentBicycling keeps you active in the great outdoors. While many progressive cities are building more bike paths and special lanes for cyclists, trails are being built for the growing numbers of mountain and tour bikers. With paths through parks, forests, winding along riverbanks and meandering through hills, what’s not to enjoy? Get out there and have fun. *Source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety |
