Bike helmets – Protection where you need itBike helmets provide you protection in case you crash or take a fall. Upon impact, the helmet absorbs energy by crushing the stiff foam liner instead of your head. They are designed to compress, much like the hood of a car is designed to collapse in a head-on collision, absorbing most of the force and leaving the occupants safe. Once a helmet is involved in an accident, it is useless as a safety device, even if it doesn’t look damaged. You, however, would hopefully have avoided a serious brain injury. All helmets made for the United States after 1999 are manufactured with safety standards, so this is less of an issue. Look for a CPSC approved sticker on the inside or outside of the helmet. Choose a helmet with a smooth, uniform shell, as this helps create a smooth skid on rough pavement, preventing your neck and head from jerking. Look for bright helmets with reflective materials, so drivers can see you or your child. Sizes are not standardized, and many companies create a “one size fits all” in regards to adult and child helmets. Adjustable padding and straps help fit to your head. Proper WearHelmets should be snug but not too snug, and should not tip forward or backward on the head. They should fit level on the head, and extend to about 2 fingers above the eyebrows. The strap should be snug without pinching. A child should never leave their helmet on when not riding a bike, as it could snag on a play structure or a tree. Teach them how to put on or take off their helmet properly. ComfortWeight is not an issue with today’s helmets, as they are made of stiff, light-weight foam. Vents in the helmet provide a measure of air flow to cool the head, with vents in the front providing the best air flow. Sweat can be controlled with a built in sweatband. Look for a helmet with a snug fit and no pressure points around your head. Paragon Sports
